Can you card wool by hand?
Take one of the carders in your left hand and with your right hand, lay staples of wool across the teeth of the carder. Distribute the wool evenly across the entire card until the teeth are barely showing through.
Can you spin wool without carding?
After the fleece is dry you will want to create rovings, which are loose fiber rolls of wool that is the final preparation for spinning yarn. You will need two carding brushes for this. Now it is possible to spin wool without carding it first. Instead you have to “rove” it, which can be done with the hands alone.
Can you use dog brushes for carding wool?
That being said, if you want to get into fiber prep and/or spinning, but don’t want to invest in a drum carder just yet, hand carders are definitely the way to go. - Immerse the wool slowly and let it soak for ten minutes so the dirt can loosen.

Wool garments should be washed on the wool setting (usually gentle action at 40°C). If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, use the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates. Use a neutral, mild detergent that is preferably Woolmark recommended (look for the Woolmark symbol on the packet).
How do you clean hand carders?
Wipe the handles with rubbing alcohol. Don’t soak the wood, just make the rag damp and briskly wipe the handles. You may have to do this several times to dissolve the lanolin. As to the carding cloth, lightly spray some rubbing alcohol on both pads and quickly card some clean “junk wool”.
Can you wash raw wool in washing machine?

When washing in cold weather, we recommend filling the tub with hot water before beginning the first wash, to raise the temperature of the tub and reduce the loss of heat. A gas water heater is ideal for heating the amount of water needed to wash wool.
