Where are pelecypods found?
Most pelecypods form shell banks in the seas or rivers on sand and mud flats. Many burrow into the mud or sand and even into wood or rock. Some oysters attach themselves to rocks, and others creep about the sea floor by means of a hatchet-shaped foot thrust between the open valves.
Where do clams live?
Soft shell clams live in the intertidal zone, the wet area exposed between high and low tide. Clams are under the water during high tide and are uncovered on the tide flats during low tide. To protect themselves clams burrow down in the mud and sand using their foot. They can burrow more than 11 inches!

Fossils are heavier than shells as they are formed on a rock. You can try to match up the unique markings on the shell with glossaries found online on natural history museum websites to try to work out what type of animal left the marking. Ammonites are not the only shell fossils.
