Do building regs replace staircase?
Installing a new staircase or relocating an existing staircase requires building regulations approval.
What regulations cover stairs?
To comply with the Regulations, the minimum going should be 220mm, whilst the pitch of the staircase should not exceed 42°. When it comes to staircase width, there are no restrictions as such, but standard flights measure 860mm, and for a main staircase it is agreed that a width of between 800mm and 900mm works best.

Is it illegal not to have bannisters on stairs?
Stairs should have a handrail on at least one side if the stairs are less than 1 metre wide. A handrail on both sides of the stairs will be required if the stair width is greater than this. You do not need a handrail on the first two bottom steps.
Do I need a handrail for 2 steps?
The building code does not refer to the number of “steps” but it does require a handrail when there are two or more “risers”. For clarification, a “riser” is the vertical portion of a stair. A two riser minimum would translate to two steps. Be aware that not all applications must meet building code.

What is the building code for stair treads?
Stair Tread Depth. As for stair treads the depth should not be less than 10 inches however this will require nosing projections. To avoid having to install nosing the code requires the depth of the tread to be no less than 11 inches.

What are the OSHA requirements for standard stairs?
