Why was Cannop Ponds built in the Forest of Dean?
The site was originally home to the Severn and Wye Railway, which was constructed to allow exploitation of the mineral resources of the Forest of Dean. The ponds were created in 1825 and 1829 to supply a waterwheel at Parkend Ironworks.

Cannop Ponds, managed by Forestry England, is a popular picnic site. It offers a large flat grassed area close to the car park and next to the ponds. The ponds themselves are picturesque and are home to lots of wildlife including mandarin ducks, swards and dragonflies. The top pond is a wildlife trust nature reserve.
