What is turface?
Turface® calcined clay is a moisture management tool, used in conjunction with sound management practices, to prevent fields from becoming oversaturated and slick, as well as dried out and hard. Turface helps keep the moisture level at just the right amount, and for a longer period of time than other mixes.
Is turface a good substitute for akadama?
Soil is the word to use in the search section to find threads to check out. Turface, pumice, lava, DE, drystall(pumice) are some of the things used as an alternate to akadama, but they aren’t the same.
What is akadama rock?
Akadama (赤玉土, akadamatsuchi, red ball earth) is a naturally occurring, granular clay-like mineral used as soil for bonsai trees and other container-grown plants. Akadama may also act as one component of growing medium when combined with other elements such as sand, composted bark, peat, or crushed lava.

Can I use rocks instead of pumice?
No. Pumice is best (I explain why below), but many other options work: perlite, decomposed granite, rice-sized bits of gravel and even chicken grit. Aim for about two parts inorganic coarse-grained sand or fine crushed rock to one part organic (i.e. plant-based) material (like compost).
Is pumice the same as lava rock?
Lava and pumice are of both volcanic origins. Pumice is lighter because of the air mixed in it, while lava rock is denser. Lava rock also has bigger vesicles and thicker vesicle walls than pumice. Lava is a type of scoria rock and it is a molten rock released from a volcano during an eruption.
