Our tours frequently sell out, particularly during peak season (Oct-April). We strongly recommend booking online in advance. Photography is strictly prohibited whilst in our tour spaces.
Do Wetas fly?
Though it looks like a big cricket, giant weta are too heavy to fly. Some of its relatives, like the tree weta, are more agile and can jump, but giant weta are decidedly earth-bound.
Can a WETA hurt you?
Wētā can bite with powerful mandibles. Tree wētā bites are painful but not particularly common.

Just gently relocate them into your garden. The endangered giant weta are very large insects, weighing on average 20-30 grams. The heaviest on record is 70g – a bit heavier than a peanut slab.
