Dan Young (Chief Ice Cream Dipper and CEO of Young’s Dairy) started thinking at home about the idea of a family of cows and mentioned it to his wife, Cathy about helping come up with the idea. One of Cathy’s friend’s husband, Dave Gullett, who does art work on the side heard the conversation.

Young’s Jersey Dairy Since 1869 Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II. For the next 10 years, Hap and his three sons Carl, Bob, and Bill, farmed the 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres.

The Young’s Jersey Dairy company began in 1946. Beginning in the 1950s, the family began selling milk from their dairy operations, expanding to cheese and some food items such as sandwiches and hot dogs in the 1960s. They started selling ice cream in 1981, for which they are best known today.

Does Young’s Dairy make their own ice cream?
We make all of our own ice cream right here on the farm. Our ice cream is made from a 15% butterfat mix (pasteurized milk, cream, and sugar mixture). We make our ice cream with machines called batch freezers, which make 5 or 10 gallons of ice cream per batch. Each batch takes about 12-15 minutes to make.

When did the Youngs start selling jersey milk?
In 1958, the Young Family decided to try to sell our Jersey milk directly to the public. The first sales room was a modest operation. We built a 10′ by 10′ room onto the end of the milk room. The equipment was also modest – some glass jugs, a refrigerator, a cash drawer, and the honor system.
